Recently, I learned that I have a serious caffeine addiction. It’s not that I drink a huge amount of coffee, and actually, I can’t touch it after 2 p.m. without it impacting my sleep. Due to the requirements of a medical test, I was unable to have coffee for 24 hours. The headache, brain fog, and general feeling of uneasiness that transpired were significant. It made me realize just how dependent I am on it.
As I thought about the situation through the haze of misery, I wondered whether I should take the opportunity to get off the stuff for a while and “cleanse” my system. I asked ChatGPT for some guidance and found there are many benefits to taking a break. For example, resetting tolerance, improved sleep quality, reduced anxiety and stress response, better hydration and digestion, and resetting natural energy levels.
Since I don’t consume a huge amount of coffee, I didn’t see resetting tolerance as a big deal, but improving sleep quality was important to me, as I constantly monitor my sleep. I discounted the anxiety and stress and the hydration issue, but the resetting of natural energy levels was intriguing.
Sure, I would love to see how a cessation impacts my sleep and understand my natural energy levels better. But at this point, with the test in my rearview mirror, I decided that there wasn’t a big enough push to go through the agony! Besides, I really enjoy my coffee. It’s a big part of my morning ritual.
As we live, we have the opportunity to examine our decisions, behaviors, and patterns and then decide what makes the most sense moving forward. It applies to almost every aspect of our lives.
