Thoughts From Travel: Part 5

By October 14, 2025 No Comments

It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of travel. Seeing new places, and dipping your taste buds into the foods and drinks of different cultures. While I truly enjoyed wine tastings in my younger days, I recognize that I just don’t have the constitution to consume alcohol now. It’s a fact and a disappointment.

That’s not to say I didn’t sample and taste, but I did notice the impact it had on my body and my sleep. And therein lies the conflict. After all, experiencing France, Spain, and Portugal is not an everyday occurrence. But sacrifices must be made… and I did.

After two days in Germany and twelve nights on the cruise, we disembarked in Lisbon and were immediately hustled aboard tuk-tuks for a three-hour tour around the city. (If you’re not familiar with this mode of transportation, think of a four-passenger golf cart without a hint of cushioning or suspension.)

The city was predominantly cobblestone. It was lovely, hilly, and left my ass completely unhappy (don’t laugh, it isn’t funny).

Wendy and I decided that our touring was over, and we devoted the remainder of our vacation to self-care, massage, and recovery. I was reminded, again, that sometimes my desires exceed my ability.

It’s not a bad lesson.
