As we traveled by bus through Sicily, we found ourselves on NARROW roads filled with switchbacks and tight curves. Our tour guide assured us that the driver knew what he was doing and explained that the only rule for driving in Sicily is: There Are No Rules.
I pondered that while saying a brief prayer.
After a lifetime of following rules, what happens when suddenly there aren’t so many?
We did make it to our destination in one piece. A beautiful vineyard with Mount Etna, now erupting, as the backdrop.
In Chapter X, we have the opportunity to toss some of the rules we’ve followed for decades into the trash bin. The expectations that kept us “between the lines” throughout our careers don’t necessarily apply anymore.
We are free to explore, try new things, mess stuff up, experiment, and discover what works and what doesn’t. We don’t have to measure every choice against the rules that once defined our careers.
You get to decide which rules are still worth following and which ones you’re ready to leave behind.
