I used to believe that if I can do it, anyone could do it.
I came to realize the falsity of this statement. After all, we all have our own gifts and abilities and they might not be so easily transferrable.
We must—let me emphasize MUST—celebrate our own competencies, talents and genius and respect that some things are just not in our wheelhouse…and that’s ok. At the same time, we must celebrate and respect the abilities of others as their genius.
While measuring ourselves against others seems hardwired into our DNA, it is somewhere between useless and harmful to beat ourselves up and judge our lacks vs. others. Just as comparing our wealth vs. that of our cohorts, community, companions, colleagues and family is a waste of time.
My hope is that you’ll recognize when you’re beating yourself up and stomp on the brakes. We’re all just trying to do our best.
Cheers,
Michael
