I hear this a lot from men who are facing retirement.
It’s a deep question of self-identity.
During work life where everything you do is pretty much centered around your career, business, occupation, job, gig, title…it’s simple: You are your job!
But if you step away (or have the rug pulled out from under you with little or no warning), you’re left in a quandary. You’re now a “used to be.” Which sounds dismal.
Perhaps there’s a better way of dealing with this. Ask yourself the following questions:
Who were you before you were your job?
Who were you before your expertise and competencies?
Who were you before your world centered on your work?
Chance are, you were freer of spirit, more adventuresome, more open, more curious…
My advice: discover who you were before and then start to move forward. It might help.
