Nothing is easier than reacting to a feeling or thought.
Our brain chemicals unleash a need for speed—the result of which may lead to anywhere from mistake to disaster. I’m not talking about avoiding danger or threats; I’m referring to those internal thoughts that cause us to react without taking a moment to consider the ramifications.
Example: A client called and said they were in Florida, having a wonderful vacation and decided to buy a condo and rent it out. Now it was clear to me that their ‘vacation brain’ was clearly engaged and all they could see was the monthly rental income pouring in and they’d have a place to go whenever they wanted.
Clearly, they had created no space in order to consider the ramifications of their decision. After a brief discussion where I posed several questions like, “What if a tenant trashes the place?” or “How long can you continue to pay the mortgage, taxes and condo fees without consistent rent?” did the client decide not to sign the contract.
There are many such moments when a thought sparks an immediate action, without the benefit of consideration and evaluation. Some will impact our happiness; some will impact our wallets (which also impacts our happiness).
It is important that we create space in between thought and action.
A space where our thoughtfulness and maturity can best test the new feeling against our storehouse of knowledge and experience. That space is the breeding ground for wisdom.
Can you think of a time when your immediate reaction or response led to an unfavorable outcome?
I can—for sure.
Seek to create space in between thoughts and action…it is a source of clarity.
