I’m Sorry

How good are you at apologies?

You might be ninja-level or perhaps they are something long since practiced.

At our recent Zoom get-together, a question was raised about the idea of apologizing to others being thought of as “weakness.” You know, that never-back-down philosophy that was drilled into us as youngsters.

What is injured when admitting to fault or flaw—pride?
What is activated in our thoughts when confronted with our mistake—shame?
What does it feel like in our bodies when knowing we erred? For me, it is a tightening in my stomach and speeding up of my heartbeat.

If you’re out of practice in the art of apologizing, consider the benefits.

As in the old commercial, “Try it, you’ll like it!” Even if you don’t exactly ‘like’ it, you will certainly grow in your humanity.

What do you think?
