Staying in Your Lane

By August 8, 2021 No Comments

I had an interesting conversation with someone who recently retired. He was an A-lister in his field. After spending his entire career in education, the last half was in a very prestigious position as head of a private school.

Now retired, he’s taken his lifetime of experience into another iteration at an educational institution—and working with a search firm that finds candidates for positions similar to what he’d held for many years.

I could tell from our conversation how much he enjoys his new experiences. As someone who enjoys change, it made me wonder why he would stay focused on the same area in which he spent his illustrious career.

The reality is most people don’t enjoy change and feel more comfortable in their “lane.” What keeps us from changing lanes?

Is it fear?

Is it the belief that their only value is in one area?

Or perhaps, they cannot imagine doing anything else?

I don’t have the answer, but I expect it might be all of the above. What do you think?
