I’ve worked with fitness trainers for years. I’ve gone that route because I don’t have the confidence of remembering where my hands go or the proper position for doing an exercise. It’s a good investment in my health; I’m conscious of not injuring myself because of sloppy alignment or improper form.
I’ve had a yoga practice for many years. Initially, I began my learning with a private teacher who could watch and adjust my positioning. This prevented me from learning bad habits that would be harder to unlearn than to do it right from the start.
I know about stretching. I know good core exercises (planks, stability ball, ab wheel, etc.). I can hit the rower with good form and get a great cardio workout. I have learned what I can do without supervision and where I feel it needs guidance.
All good, right?
Well, not so fast. Yesterday, I took a 3 mile walk around the neighborhood and came home with a tight right calf. I bathed in Biofreeze and CBD. It was no big deal.
This morning, I decided to walk and expected that the tightness would loosen as I walked. Uhhhh…WRONG…half a mile in, my calf let me know that it was not loosening, but tightened further causing pain with every step.
Limping home, I realized that I haven’t learned quite enough. I should have stretched, I should have rested and I should have used infra-red therapy rather than “walking it off”. I’m still learning…
