Primacy

Being creatures of society, we learn the pursuit of primacy from early childhood. You know, like the saying that unless you’re the lead dog, the view is the same. Winning and coming in first is all that counts.

I remember coaching my son in baseball and soccer. The parents who cared deeply about their children winning, being recognized and getting the trophy was so evident. My biggest challenge was to keep these rather obnoxious and, in my view, misguided parents in check. The kids wanted to have fun. Sure, winning was great. But for most, it was about increasing their skills and being a part of a team.

(I could tell you stories….)

But here we are, in or approaching Chapter X. What is winning in this phase of life? What does primacy mean now? How do you shift away from competition and achievement to something more, uh, rational?

While our paths forward might lack clarity and fear might creep into your mind, remember this:

Regardless of your time of life, the path is always murky. Fear has been a companion—and a great motivator if used properly. Now is the time to focus on you, your values and experimenting with new iterations. The need for primacy has been kicked to the curb.
