What is Enough?

By November 9, 2021 No Comments

Enough is a difficult concept. I’m sure you’ve probably heard the old trope, “You can never be too rich.” But in truth, if you match your values with your resources, enough isn’t that difficult to find.

On the other hand, there are other ways to consider the scope of enough. For example, I recently decided it was time to put away all of our outdoor furniture and gardening equipment for the winter.

This project consumed four straight hours of re-arranging, carrying, stacking, emptying flower planters, washing, draining, drying and sweeping. By the end of the day, I was DONE. My body ached from non-stop activity, charting over 15,000 steps for the day.

Should I have broken the project up over several days? Probably.

Should I have asked for help? Eh, maybe.

Did I cross the threshold of enough? Yes, I did, based on the fact that it took two days to feel like myself. Self-awareness of what is enough—and what is too much—is pretty damned important, especially as we age.

It’s ok to test boundaries. But knowing what enough represents in all facets of life is a sign of wisdom. I guess this weekend proved that I still have a ways to go in that department.
