Lessons Learned from Business Reinvention

Many years ago, I read an interesting article that demonstrated the need for a business to reinvent itself before it reaches the crest of growth.

Imagine the sloping graph from bottom to top and then back to the bottom. According to the article, if they are to grow, businesses must reimagine, reinvent and reengineer themselves while on the upward slope of the curve; somewhere around two-thirds of the way up towards the apex.

For companies that fail to implement change, their ability to regain an upward arc will most likely wait until they’ve reached the bottom, where they are basically starting over.

There are personal lessons to be learned from this idea. For example, when should your next chapter be imagined and investigated: the day after you retire or several years before?

In my opinion, the latter is by far the better choice for most people.

While a business must consider ideas such as what products or services the ‘market’ values, how to deliver, market and support their new offerings, individuals have equally challenging questions. For example:

  • How much money do you need to sustain your life?
  • What will provide satisfaction?
  • Identify the challenges and problem-solve potential solutions.
  • What attitudes, ideas and beliefs might be impacted by your shift to life after work?

These are big topics that require your willingness and ability to meet the challenges of reinvention.
