We spend a good portion of our adult life accumulating things. We buy homes, cars, art, jewelry or other possessions that we fancy.

Sometimes we approach it using a utilitarian mindset. Other times, simply because it makes us feel good about ourselves, our lives and places us in a certain societal position among our peers.

As we mature into our next phase of life we also typically reassess our needs, wants and desires. What we are attached to says a lot about who we are and what we value.

Many years ago, while visiting Kripalu (my happy place), I met a man whose sum total of his possessions fit in his car. No, it was not a massive SUV, pickup truck or moving van. It was a simple sedan that looked like it’s seen a lot of miles.

When I asked him about it, he said, “I am not attached to things. What I have is what I need and want.” He was one contented dude.

So I ask, what are you attached to? Has it changed over the years? Do those things provide joy?

Please share your thoughts.
