Perhaps for the First Time…

By April 24, 2022 No Comments

Throughout our entire lives, we are beholden and otherwise impeded by the demands of others. Our life after our careers is perhaps the first time where we control 100% of our time. Think about it:

We’re controlled by our parents from birth. Next, we’re required by law, society and culture to attend school. And then we go to work.

For many or most, we then settle into relationships where our spouses, partners, significant others place demands on our time and energy. Our careers suck our attention as we put more and more emphasis on success.

As we turn the page, the realization dawns: no one has designs on my time other than me. (OK, if you’re married or in a relationship, that’s not 100% true, but for the most part, it is.)

This freedom can be the greatest blessing. Or it can become a curse, if you don’t know—or don’t learn—how to channel this control to something positive and fulfilling. The double-edged sword of time ownership is not to be ignored, nor blown off.

Consider it a wonderful gift that is not to be squandered. If you are not mindful, this “gift” of time might seem like being consigned to a “Sisyphean” punishment of monotony and despair.

What do you think?

How are you handling the challenge?
