Transitions can be destabilizing. Think about other big changes you have encountered in your life…the earliest transition I remember is my first experience in a sleep away camp; I was probably 8, and I knew no one.
It was hard, but I finally found my feet and had a wonderful summer. I can still remember the taste of the “bug juice,” the dusty trails throughout the campgrounds, and the feeling of the mud/muck on the bottom of the lake.
The next big transitions were junior high and high school. You know, being a newbie is tough. Then college (“now this s#%t is getting real”) and my world turned upside down. I could go on and on. My first job, giving notice when moving on, going from novice to levels of accomplishment… each step a new challenge; each step shoving me out of my comfort zone.
In hindsight, every step I took became a lesson to prepare me for the next one. Each point on the journey marked a progression towards another transition, presenting fresh opportunities to learn about myself, explore my capabilities, and embrace the willingness to step away from my routine.
Everyone has a different timeline for their adjustment, but what I’ve found is that attitude is everything. Remaining positive in the throes of discomfort is the bright shining armor you need to get you through the rough spots.
Once you find your feet, the world of possibilities awaits.
