Meaning

Community (Part 2)

Yesterday, I returned from the C3 writers conference, my first experience with this remarkable group of caring, creative and engaged writers. Their genres were as diverse as they were in experience, gender, age and attitude.

But what was most striking to me was their generosity in accepting me, a complete newbie, seeking help, guidance and support. Personally, I’ve never been the most comfortable person when it comes to approaching strangers, let alone asking for help. Yet, this was precisely my purpose for being there, so I made an effort to engage as many people as possible.

At this stage of my life, I’ve found a sense of community in music and now in my other love, writing. I felt accepted and welcomed in return and, wow, it was incredibly powerful and meaningful.

If you’re ever hesitant to jump into a new community, consider invoking the famous “WWMD” (What Would Michael Do?) line of thought and move forward. You might be surprised at just how wonderful it can be. And if, by chance, you aren’t met with the response you hope for, remember that the only right answer is that it’s not your tribe. Keep looking and trying until you find your community.
