When you think of the word “retirement,” the mind swims with the possibilities. Some envision it as a time for sitting on a beach or planted on the couch. Others see it as an opportunity for working part-time and engaging in various activities. For some, it’s a chance to focus on physical health and fitness, as well as pursuing things that their schedule didn’t allow during their work years.

I know some men who have defined retirement as a time to play golf—hard stop—and some men who choose to teach or take courses of expertise or interest.

Regardless of how you define retirement, the point is that whatever you do should be aimed at your heart’s desire. The goal is to devote the time needed to explore all the corners of your thoughts and feelings to discover what is meaningful for you.

The key here is to avoid defaulting to something that seems easiest at all costs. The challenges that come with aging DEMAND that you continue to grow, learn, expand, and become more capable of dealing with the inevitable obstacles life throws your way.

Be courageous in your exploration.

Be mindful of the ticking clock.

Be aware of the pitfalls of lazy thinking.

Be joyful in your actions and, most of all,

Be grateful for all the good things in your life.
