If You Don’t Have the Tools, Go Get Some New Ones

By November 4, 2023 No Comments

During our last monthly Zoom get together, the topic came up regarding creating new social relationships. This doesn’t seem to be a problem for those extroverts who have mastered the art of social ease, but for us introverts, it can be really challenging.

Some of the comments really hit home, and we all agreed that one’s mindset is key. Beginning with a negative outlook doesn’t bode well for your prospects. But if you start in a positive mindset, chances of success are way better.

One participant shared a valuable tip for initiating conversations with new people. Start with asking a very simple question: “Tell me about yourself.” These five words can become a great social lubricant when getting to know someone new. However, it comes with a caveat — you actually need to be engaged and interested. If your eyes and attention are elsewhere, your chances for opening up avenues of connection are slim.

Consider your social toolkit and whether it needs an upgrade. The fact is, real social connection is important to your well-being. It’s time to lean into learning new skills.
