You know the old saying, “Man plans, and God laughs.” It truly encapsulates life. We humans love to hold onto the idea that we have control, but in truth, we control very little. As we age, we tend to be less adaptable, and change becomes more difficult.
Inevitably, things veer off course into unexpected territories, and then the proverbial “you-know-what” hits the fan. How can you prepare for those times when things go sideways?
I have an overly simplified way of looking at it:
- Take a breath or three
- Assess the situation
- Ask yourself whether you’ve ever encountered a similar situation where you can rely on your experience.
- Call on higher powers for guidance.
- If it’s not dire: laugh. If it is: take another breath.
- Seek help from those in a position to provide relief.
Things do go awry; it’s as normal as things going according to plan. The question is how you deal with it.
