I recently attended a workshop at Kripalu on breaking through creativity, led by the incredible poet and philosopher David Whyte. For those who are unfamiliar, check him out; his works are, IMHO, spectacular, meaningful, rich, and inspiring.
One of the poems he read is called “Just Beyond Yourself,” in which he writes in the second line, “it’s where you need to be.”
I’ve been thinking a lot about this statement. Not knowing David’s intention for certain, it said to me that if I am to break through to a more fully creative self, I need to shift something, change something about my beliefs, behaviors, and habits. I need to see beyond what my eyes and brain have been telling me to see more.
I’ve been thinking a lot about this statement. Not knowing David’s intention for certain, it suggests to me that if I am to break through to a more fully creative self, I need to shift something—change something about my beliefs, behaviors, and habits. I need to see beyond what my eyes and brain have been telling me to perceive.
I think that’s a big part of Chapter X (at least for me): to break out of what was and push myself to deeper levels of meaning, fuller, richer experiences of life, and most of all, to discover what lies beneath who I’ve been up to now.
Thoughts?
P.S. I am desperately trying to get David to join me on the podcast!
