A Hero

As you might have surmised by now, I am probably the least handy person on the planet.

Unlike my father, who built furniture, repaired plumbing, wired lights and switches, painted and wallpapered… I stop at changing light bulbs.

But to my four-year-old granddaughter, I am a hero of fixing. She walked into the room the other day with her plastic fireman’s helmet in hand. After telling me it was broken, she explained that I needed to fix it.

A few dabs of Gorilla Glue later, the helmet was as fixed as I could manage; it wasn’t pretty, but the cracks were gone. She was happy and told me I was the “best fixer.”

Needless to say, it felt pretty damned good. While I underplayed my actions, to her, I was awesome!

To be honest, being a hero is not a bad gig.

In Chapter X, we have the opportunity to be heroes through small acts and reinvent how we see ourselves.
