If there’s one word I would eliminate from the lexicon, it’s the word “should.” I don’t mean in its usage like, “Should it rain, we’ll go to the museum.” No, that’s fine.
It’s the guilt-laden version:
“I should go to the gym.”
“I should volunteer at the soup kitchen.”
“I should read a book.”
All iterations are useless, destructive, obligation-ridden ways that are poisonous to living an authentic life. When you find yourself employing the S-word, examine what it is you truly want, need, and mean. Shift, “I should go to the gym,” with “I want to go,” (with a keen understanding of WHY you want to).
You do not need to drag along a lifetime of misplaced obligation or guilt into this Chapter of your life. Instead, focus on what you want and why—and state it accordingly without guilt, shame or some misplaced belief.
Words matter.
