There was a time in my career when I envisioned building a firm that was national, with offices spread throughout the country and staffed with dozens of excellent planners. While my firm has advisors in multiple locations, it never reached the scope I once imagined. I’m not unhappy about it as I realized it just wasn’t in the cards for me.
As the saying goes, it was a “BHAG”: BIG HAIRY AUDACIOUS GOAL.
In Chapter X, my BHAG has evolved to “SHEAM”: SMALL HEART-CENTERED ENJOYABLE ACTIVE MOMENTS. I’m ok with small, simple things. I look for moments to appreciate and activities that support mental and physical health–and engagement with others who are enriching.
These small things make me happy. I made the conscious decision that if something didn’t fit into “SHEAM,” it was not being put on the “to-do” list. Sometimes, the belief is that we must keep building empires, wealth or power until our last dying breath.
The key is to find what aligns with your true values and keep moving in that direction. In that way, there’s no possibility of failure.
