Cognitive dissonance: the state of having inconsistent thoughts, beliefs, or attitudes, especially as relating to behavioral decisions and attitude change.
Some examples:
Smoking while knowing it can cause cancer and other diseases.
Selling stocks when the markets are down when you know that it’s unwise to sell.
Believing that wearing face masks during a pandemic isn’t necessary or appropriate.
We see these examples of cognitive dissonance all over the place. Why do people who are suffering economically support candidates who cater to the very rich?
In Chapter X, the stage where your work life is ending, you can believe that your life will unfold in a wonderful, exciting and purposeful way.
But if you don’t invest the time to create it, why and how would it magically happen? Can you see the cognitive dissonance?
Unless you prepare financially, intellectually, socially and emotionally for the shift, your chances of success are far from assured.
Just like you prepared for your work life all those years ago, purposefully invest the necessary time to plan, prepare and create the life you imagine in your Chapter X.
