Owning a place in the woods was revelatory in many ways. Admittedly, I have limited knowledge of all things mechanical—it came as a surprise to me that everyone doesn’t have “city” water or a sewer system. While the Berkshires feature many wonderful and soul-hugging features, city water and sewers aren’t on the list (at least where we live). Water comes from a well; sewage goes to a septic system.
Hmmmmm…
I learned that water filters needed to be replaced several times a year to filter out larger particles that come from the well. Also, that we needed a treatment system to prevent the effects of acidic mineralized water.
I asked the plumber, “What happens if the well runs dry?”
He scratched his chin and said, “The well company has to come out and drill a deeper well to tap into an aquifer.” That made me think about my next chapter and the unknown answers to the many questions that hover over the horizon.
Did I dig my own well deep enough to sustain myself? Not in a financial sense, but in areas such as resilience, curiosity, willingness and the ability to challenge myself in new ways. I wonder if I have the tools and spirit to move forward with conviction, even if I’m not “feelin’ it.”
I’ve been deep in thought about this—and I wonder about your process and thoughts. How do you see this “well?”
