For many men, the quest to find meaning post-career can be daunting.
The quest to find meaning after a career can be overwhelming for many men. After devoting six or more decades to a single direction, discovering another meaningful pursuit can be difficult. It requires going from a narrow focus to a broader perspective of oneself and the world. I get the dilemma. After all, where do you start to look when the “blinders” come off?
I believe the first place to start is with your mindset. Are you looking forward or looking backward? Do you live with regret for what was, or are you excited about the prospect of something new?
Discovering meaning is often a process of discovery. If you’re fortunate enough to have found “it,” fantastic! If you haven’t, no problem. Your job is to adopt the buffet approach: try as many different things that pique your interest without holding onto an expectation of proficiency or a particular outcome.
I believe that embracing the beginner’s mind is the most challenging yet rewarding aspect… meaning lies along that path.
