With all the terrible news inundating our lives (Israel, Ukraine, continued mass shootings… need I go on?), it’s important to find some refuge and respite from the upheaval and emotional torture of death and destruction. For me, it’s music; both listening to and playing. It’s a place to get lost in another world.
My early years were steeped in Classical music and jazz from a listening perspective. Both my parents were professional musicians, so music was a constant. Learning the trumpet was squarely in classical training (my two predominant teachers played with the NY Philharmonics and NJ Symphony).
However, I have a great love for rock, fusion, and most genres of music. There’s something to be learned from all aspects if you open your mind to the possibilities of each experience. It’s a respite from the storm of life’s upheaval.
We all need to find a place in which to wrap ourselves—a place where our hearts can soar and we can give our overworked brains a rest.
What’s yours?
