During these long days of isolation, it’s important to find satisfaction.
It’s too easy to focus on what is lost, what is difficult, what is disheartening…but it is, from personal experience, a black hole.
I have discovered a few things that are satisfying—the best has been planting seeds for the garden. Watching them germinate, sprout and grow has been affirming.
I stopped by the local garden shop to find the seed rack nearly empty (I guess my idea is not unique). I’ve also begun growing sprouts (alfalfa, radish and other greens) for salads. This is awesome because the gratification is nearly instantaneous (it takes about 5 days from beginning to salad).
I decided to re-embark on playing trumpet. It was the all-consuming obsession of my younger days and I haven’t touched it in over 40 years. Cleaning the tarnish off the silver and cleaning the horn from the inside out was also very satisfying.
I bought some basic books and have begun practicing. My biggest job, besides shutting out the inner voice that tells me just how bad I am, is to build up both air and lip strength. It’s a rotten job…haha…but it does feel good.
Finding satisfaction is an inner journey from thought to action. It’s important.
Where are you finding satisfying projects and what are you discovering?
Cheers,
Michael
