The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines generativity as “a concern for people besides self and family that usually develops during middle age. Especially: a need to nurture and guide younger people and contribute to the next generation—used in psychology by Erik Erikson.”
In our society that is focused on the individual (you know, “me-me-me”), the focus on helping others seems to be a memory from bygone days.
If this model continues to devote countless hours to “more-more-more”, we waste the valuable resources of our wisdom, experience and ability to help improve society; you know, for our kids, grandkids and great-grandkids…
The impact of generativity is a focus on the betterment of others.
What do we gain?
Your wisdom and generosity is passed on.
Your legacy, your footprint, lives on.
You inspire others to help others by setting an example.
You make a difference in the lives of others.
You learn by teaching, thereby continuing a righteous cycle.
What do we lose?
Frankly, I can’t think of a damned thing.
Pass it on….
