Growing into Elderhood

Recently, I had a conversation with someone who was lamenting that he was growing old. I saw the unhappiness clearly reflected on his face. I could have responded with something snarky, like:

“We’ve been growing older since the moment we were born.”

Or

“Would you prefer the alternative?”

But instead, I sat in the silence. Yes, the uncomfortable silence that allows thoughts and feelings to coalesce into something more helpful. After a few long moments, I said, “Yes, growing old is no picnic. Challenges and obstacles seem to make their way to the forefront of everyday life.”

I knew this was the time to end the conversation with a supportive smile. The more I reflected on it, the more I realized that this stage of life can be amazing, fulfilling, and satisfying. Especially if we choose to focus on the positive rather than the inevitable difficulties.

I thought about how life presents opportunities for learning, growth, and the accumulation of wisdom…. wisdom that can be shared and applied for the benefit of others. That’s what Elderhood is to me. We can lean into the pain of aging or embrace the growth that comes with our hard-earned wisdom.

So, which do you choose: growing old or growing into Elderhood?
