Meaning

Leading from the Right Place

As young men (think pre-or early career), we’re very body aware. We focus on our “attractiveness” in order to find a preferable mate. It also provides us with a social positioning of our prowess amongst other men.

Ultimately, we wish to dominate and show our power.

Moving into our career, the focus is on financial success where we shift to a more cerebral approach to navigating our career. It might be building a business or practice—or climbing that corporate ladder. While our physical self might still be important, decisions tend to be more intellectually focused.

For some of us, we incorporate our “gut” instinct along with our brain function to make decisions that bring us to success.

By the time we reach Chapter X, our outward physicality naturally diminishes. Maybe our cognition isn’t quite as acute as it had been 30 years ago. So perhaps it’s time to allow your heart to lead.

I had a recent conversation with a 74-year old attorney, who is battling with himself about his next step. As we spoke, he shared that he wants to help young people in some way. This was certainly not an intellectual or instinctive decision, but one of his heart.

At the end of your life, you will likely be faced with a moment of reckoning. Did you live a life of meaning? Did you make a difference? Did you leave your footprint on the lives of others?

Listen to your heart. It knows.
