Locus of Control

I think it’s fair to say that we love control. At least, we love the idea that we have control. Unfortunately, when it comes to REAL control, what we possess falls within a limited band.

It’s way easier to talk about what we can control rather than what we cannot. Although, we somehow devote a lot of energy to areas in which we have little to no sway.

For the sake of our health and sanity, we must devote our focus to areas where our real control exists. For instance, we can regulate our emotional responses to stimuli that evoke a reaction.

Here is an example:

Imagine the scenario when a driver cuts you off. Screaming, cursing, fingers flying are all reactions that are nothing but blowing off the shock of someone else’s dangerous action. But does road rage make anything better?

Happiness occurs when you can find that place within that lets go of responses and reactions that have no real meaning because there is and can be no control over the actions of others.

Focus on what you can control and let go of the rest. For most of us, it isn’t an easy task. Yet looking at the big picture, it’s a pathway to great peace and less stress.
