Maslow Strikes Again (Part 2)

In Part 1, I introduced Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. It’s a model of human motivation that begins with physiological needs (food, water, warmth, rest) and progresses to safety needs (security, stability).

Next, it evolves to belongingness and love needs (intimate relationships, friendships). It’s then followed by esteem needs (prestige and a sense of accomplishment).

Finally, the pyramid ends at the top with self-actualization (achieving one’s full potential, including through creative activities).

Another way to think about this is that in Chapter X, we now have the opportunity to shift our focus toward self-actualization. What makes life worth living? What can you bring to the world that brings you joy?

It all sounds great, but there’s a barrier we all must cross. And that’s the change of mindset about our identity, the change in attitude toward embracing new discoveries, and the challenge of confronting… uh, well, CHANGE.

Abraham Maslow said it best: “In any given moment, we have two options: to step forward into growth or step back into safety.”

Safety resides in what was, in what’s become comfortable. Growth resides on the other side of discomfort into a whole new world of possibilities.

Where do YOU want to be?
