Admittedly, I’m a coaching junkie. I believe in working with coaches who can bring their expertise to help me learn something, rather than mucking around trying to haphazardly figure it out. That’s why over my life and career, I’ve worked with business coaches, fitness trainers, yoga instructors, guitar teachers; trying to do it “right.”
One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned from the trainers I work with is to “mix it up.” In other words, while one might love to exercise their chest or arms for a physical display of their sculpted pecs or biceps, it’s also important to exercise in different ways. Exercises that help us build balance, flexibility, core strength and aerobic fitness.
I know guys who just play golf, and some who just hit the treadmill or elliptical. It’s part of their routine, and nothing will convince them that a broader spectrum of thinking is in their best interest.
As we age, balance, flexibility and core strength are so vitally important. Practices like yoga, tai chi or other martial arts that promote a strong core, flexibility and balance are pretty damned important. Okay, so you don’t come out with pumped-up biceps…but in terms of overall health, it really helps.
If you’re facing resistance in terms of trying something new, ask yourself what’s holding you back. If it’s a feeling that you’ll look stupid, or some other internally constructed destructive argument, think again.
I don’t know about you, but as long as I am destined to hang around this life, I want to feel as good as I can for as long as I am able.
In other words….mix it up!
