Pick Up Your Poles

By July 31, 2021 No Comments

The first time I ever skied, I was three weeks shy of my 40th birthday. Off we went to Butternut Basin in the Berkshires with our young children on this new adventure. Our friends had been skiing for years and encouraged us to join them for a trek to Massachusetts over the President’s Day weekend.

After renting the required equipment, I met my instructor for a lesson. I have to admit, I was a bit nervous, imagining myself leaving the mountains in a horizontal position.

As I stood on my skis at the edge of the hill, I felt the slippery snow beneath me. So I dug in my poles to prevent me from uncontrollably (in my mind) flying down the mountain. The old veteran instructor glanced at me and my implanted poles and said, “Son, you ain’t going nowhere until you lift up your poles!”

The same can be said for experiencing a new chapter of life; knowing there’s no going back, but not rushing fearlessly into the next. We have been on the edge of the mountain before, in fact, multiple times….and by now it’s clear…

“You ain’t going nowhere until you lift up your poles!”
