In speaking with various men, I often ask how they pilot their days in retirement. Most tell me they plan their days in advance and that routine is important to staying focused on what they want to accomplish. I get it.
I admit, I’m a calendar junkie. I need to see my day, and indeed, my week ahead. Workouts, self-care, writing time, social engagements, and other appointments are all there for me to see. It gives me comfort, a sense that I won’t get lost in the “weeds” of inaction.
Last week, after a lousy night’s sleep, I checked my calendar and saw a full day of activities and commitments. I asked myself, “What do I really need to do today to make it a purposeful day?”
After a few minutes of contemplation, the answer came back loud and clear: “Today is a day of rest, recovery, and self-care without guilt or self-recriminations.”
I canceled my appointments and made my apologies. Could I have powered through the day, checking every box? Sure!
But why?
I urge you to listen to that inner voice. It will tell you what it needs and wants. Honoring it is a priceless gift of self-love.
