During our most recent Zoom get-together, we focused on the issue of “vulnerability” and what that means to men. There was a consensus that the word itself held a negative connotation; one of weakness and even failure. The idea, especially in our work life, is that showing vulnerability opens the door to defeat.
Harry Scheyer, as only he can, posited the idea that we should change the framing from vulnerability to “whole-heartedness.” The concept is that we can be open to whatever is put before us, without the fear that’s been hardwired into our thinking throughout our careers.
Whole-heartedness in Chapter X allows us to be expansive and receptive; it’s a great example of reframing.
