Have you ever been faced with someone who resisted your ideas?
No one wants to feel dismissed or marginalized. If you’ve ever been the person whose ideas were resisted by others, was there a stalemate? Was there a winner—or just losers?
The other day, I had the opportunity to listen to Dr. Sam Qurashi host a discussion on Clubhouse (for those who are unfamiliar, give me a shout and I’ll clue you in).
The discussion centered around dealing with resistance and what Sam put forth was the idea that accepting the resistance of others was the first step in creating dialogue. If you don’t accept that the other person has the right to have an opinion, your rejection is the surest way of slamming the door on a meaningful dialogue.
Consider how you might meet resistance in your life in the most meaningful way. After all, as we age, we are going to be confronted by disagreeable ideas, attitudes and actions. How can you walk in the world with an openness that invites conversation and an exchange of ideas?
