Spending vs. Investing

During adulthood, and hopefully before, we learn the difference between spending and investing. We spend on (again hopefully) the things we value and we invest for our future security.

But when it comes to time, I ponder the question of whether I am spending time or investing my time.

I went for a walk the other day. Bright sunshine, trees budding, spring flowers bursting through the soil and the one true sign of Spring: forsythias exploding in wide swathes of yellow.

My mind went to the task list waiting for my return.

But as the sun bathed me in warmth, I inhaled the air that smelled of a loamy sweetness and listened to the sound of birds chirping…I felt at peace, pushing away the thoughts of the unattended list.

Was I spending this time to the highest purpose?

Was I investing this time to enjoy the spectacular day and fill my soul with happiness and peace?

For a committed workaholic and black belt in “doing,” I found space to just be; just walk, feel, experience the sights, smells and sounds. It was ninety minutes of bliss and not a single item was crossed off the list.

Maybe the answer is that I spent time investing in my happiness.
