Earlier this week, I missed a step as I made my way from my bedroom after waking up. I hit the floor like a sack of flour, with my phone and iPad falling in opposite directions. No one else was home, except for the puppy who witnessed my bit of grace with a fit of barking concern from her crate.

My wife had already left for work. There I was, kissing the floor by myself, with my dog completely freaked out by my unceremonious arrival. I wasn’t hurt, but stunned by the speed at which my shoulder and hip met the tile floor.

Several days later, I still feel the soreness in the contact points. While I’m definitely not injured, I’ve noticed that the lingering soreness is a new thing. Years ago, I would have healed without a trace within a day. Here it is four days later and my body is still providing feedback.

As we age, healing takes longer. It’s just a fact; something to notice and move on from. I’m not worrying (at least not now), but it’s an awareness of changes that is important.
