Stuck on Your Journey?

I’ve had many conversations with men about this life-changing transition after their careers. For some, it’s been relatively smooth, and I think that’s mostly because they’ve put in the work considering their option, desires, dreams, and values. But others are challenged to lubricate the gears that can move them into their next phase with joy and positive expectancy.

Think about it this way: in our early years (childhood), we dream vividly of the future and the excitement of being doctors, firefighters, inventors, astronauts, writers, actors, artists, yoga instructors, or politicians—you get the drift. As we sift through the decisions and their potential ramifications, our vision narrows to pinpoint focus to move along that desired track.

Once we make a decision (or it’s made for us), that intense focus on how we allocate our time and energy is not a detriment to moving forward into the next chapter. We need to widen our view and align it with our values. If your viewpoint feels closed or stuck in a narrow setting, consider the following steps:

Think about how you feel when you:

Travel to see new sites

Spend time with family or close friends

Build or assemble something

Engage in physical activity

Create art (i.e. music, writing, painting, sculpting, etc.)

Learn something new

Help others

The trick is to engage yourself in a variety of activities and closely monitor how you feel during and after.

Do you feel:

Energized

Interested

Bored

Excited

Exhilarated

Understanding how your body responds to different experiences is a key to moving forward.

Another “trick” is to ponder (and I mean, really think about it) your legacy. How do you wish to be remembered? What will endure beyond your physical existence? Do you aspire to be remembered solely as a great lawyer, doctor, or carpenter?

Unfortunately, the window of opportunity to live fully and to your values is not open for long. After all, we are in our last 10%, 20%, or 30% of life?

Before this window closes, take action on your own behalf. Find out what lights you up, what brings joy and meaning, and endeavor to live your best life.
