The Why of Purpose

We talk a lot about finding meaning and purpose in this chapter of life. There is a strong urge to discover purpose, live life to the fullest and experience joy. But for some, there may be a struggle or uncertainty about what purpose means, leading to the inevitable question about whether the found purpose is TRULY the “right” one.

There are multiple ways to get there on the journey to finding purpose–there is no one way or definitive right way. There is only your exploration, continuous learning, and gaining a clear understanding of what resonates with you.

One effective approach, as Simon Sinek so wonderfully puts it, is to start with “why.” By digging into your why, you’re more likely to find a path worth exploring. For example, if you think your purpose might be to help others…ask yourself why that’s important to you.

Perhaps it’s driven by a desire to leave the world better than you found it, to rectify past actions or to set an example for your children or grandchildren or because you feel strongly about a particular activity.

Explore these ideas if you’re having difficulty. Remember, purpose can change, but your values don’t. You might find ripe fruit by thinking about what you value (and why) as a means of discovering your true north.

If you’ve found “it”,  I would love to hear what you discovered and how you arrived at it.  On the other hand, if you are still in the process of searching, please share what you have tried so far and any progress you have made. Remember, we’re all in this together.
