There’s a time to be a salmon…

You know the story of the intrepid salmon that swim upstream in their final journey to spawn before their life ends.

You’ve seen the films of their perilous challenges over obstacles and through rapids—their beaten, bruised and exhausted bodies finally reaching their destination.

Sounds like your work life, right(maybe without the spawning)? Successful people become accustomed to fighting their way to achieve their goals.

Swimming upstream is a genetic imperative for salmon. It might also be the way you approach your career. But like the salmon, there’s a cost if you do it constantly.

There might be times during Chapter X when that uphill battle is the right thing to do for you, say when fighting a health issue or for a cause in which you believe. But it’s also a time to use your wisdom and experience to choose carefully where you put your energy.

Sometimes, being the leaf that is carried gently downstream is the right approach. Be mindful of choosing the approach that suits your need at the time. You can’t swim upstream forever…
