What Fills You-What Drains You

By October 23, 2021 No Comments

Let’s explore the topic of self-awareness in a slightly different way. For instance, we all have our unique preferences, likes, dislikes, attractions, and revulsions.

In a food sense, I am attracted to clean, healthy foods and good pastrami. While that might make no sense, it’s the truth. The mere idea of liver repulses me. On the music front, I am attracted to too many genres to discuss. But I am turned off by music that is angry, misogynistic or too loud for me to process.

Here’s an exercise to consider:

Think about all the areas of your life. For example, health and exercise, family, social, intellectual pursuits, and foods. Next, rate these areas as “What Fills You Up” and “What Drains You.”

The list should provide you with insights to consider about how you invest your time and energy. For me, the thought of picking up golf again leaves me cold but the idea of trumpet studies gets me excited. If I think about training for a marathon all I feel is a deep ache in my knees…versus learning and practicing Aikido, which brings me a sense of calm and excitement.

Where do I want to spend my time? Doing things that pump me up!

What about you?
