Having spent the last four decades as a planner, I recognize my own tendency to think things through in advance. This mindset is useful in so many aspects of life, whether it’s projects, travel, or life in general. My natural reaction is to consider the why, when, what, how, and who of everything. But sometimes, planning needs to go out the window in favor of simply starting.
As you know, I spend a fair amount of time writing, whether it’s a Chapter X piece, an article for a publication, or something creative. When I sit down to write, I need to feel that initial spark of inspiration, the birth of an idea, or the formation of a concept stir within me.
Sometimes all it takes is placing my fingers on the keyboard and simply starting. Other times, I have no idea what’s going to come out and whether it will be interesting. There are occasions when the “delete” key is the only alternative, but there are others when I feel really good about what’s on the screen in front of me.
If you’re feeling stuck, if you’re hitting a wall….forget planning…just START! Begin with the mindset that taking any action beats doing nothing. The outcome will be what it will be. Do your best to stay open-minded and curious, and, for heaven’s sake, cut yourself some slack.
