Throughout our lives, we’ve usually known what our roles were supposed to be, at least in a general sense. As a son, a student, a husband or partner, an employee, or a leader… we pretty much understood the goal and what was expected of us.
Now, here we are in Chapter X, sitting with what can feel like an “unsolvable” problem. What is our role now? There is no guidebook and no defined structure. There is only you, deciding the depth and breadth of your role. That can feel either incredibly freeing or very frightening.
Navigating life without the same constraints is a new challenge. Creating something from nothing is an act of courage and determination. I’ve seen some people create a flow that feels supportive and positive, while others struggle to find a path that feels comfortable.
If you’re struggling, begin with the essentials. For example, if physical exercise is important to you, add it to your calendar. Take each aspect of the life you’re trying to build and fit it into a sensible structure that works for you. It may take several attempts before you hone it into the right shape.
The only real failure is doing nothing, or continuing to do what you’ve always done simply because it feels less daunting. Think about it.
