Yeah, I know. Seedless watermelons are the big thing. Science has figured out how to deliver these juicy globes of deliciousness into our hands without the bother of those pesky black seeds. I say, “BOOOOOOOO!”
I remember summer days sitting on our front steps, spitting pits. It was a rite of summer, a contest of power and prowess. There were bragging rights to be had and an ongoing battle for supremacy. I remember my children sitting with my father on those same steps, having the same experience. The joy and laughter still echo in my memory.
My grandchildren are being robbed of the fun of spitting pits. Of watching little black seeds scatter in front of them. Is this progress? Is this just another step that drives kids to tablets, phones, and screens instead of experiencing something that is simply fun?
Some things should be preserved, while others can be cast aside in favor of something better. But honestly, is seedless watermelon really better?
