Breaking habits

By September 17, 2020 No Comments

We are creatures of habits. We love our routines, even if they lead to problems, dangers or ill health.

Back in the day, I had my habit of stopping at the local bagel shop for my morning fix of deliciousness. It made me happy…but it also added unneeded and unwanted weight to my body. It’s no secret that refined flour, sugar and other processed foods are just not good for us. But it was my habit. When I decided to change my life, my eating habits and my waistline, I had to rearrange my thinking and actions.

The first thing I did was change my route so as NOT to pass the bagel shop. Hey, avoiding temptation is good start.

Then I decided to prepare a healthy breakfast and eat at home, so there would be no hunger cravings.

Finally, I kept a count of each successful day and devoted time to congratulating my good efforts.

As you delve into Chapter X, consider the following:

Make a list of ALL your habits (including which hand you hold your toothbrush or order of dressing).

Look at the list and consider if any items should be eliminated or altered.

Answer the “why” question. Sometimes, changing habits is just a good exercise for your brain.

Replace the unwanted habits with new ones that promote growth. Create your action steps.

Celebrate your successes, but allow for the fact that your ‘human-ness’  might cause you to lapse back. Oh well, tomorrow is another day!

Now I can pass my favorite bagel shop without feeling an intense need to swerve in and indulge—at least most of the time.

Occasionally, I do stop…but it might be once or twice a year that I allow myself the pleasure. Hey, I’m only human. But my health comes first and that’s a way better habit.
