Identify the Enemy

Walt Kelly said it best in the thought balloon above Pogo’s head: “We have met the enemy and he is us.” Really, how many times have we said or thought that we, or someone we know, are our own worst enemy?

Yup, we are often the founder and perpetrator of many of the ills we suffer. We get in our own way with errant thoughts, missteps, mistakes, and self-sabotage.

I’ve been sketching out an idea for a novel. I think it’s a good idea, different, and one I feel committed to. But as I’ve been recording my ideas, I walked headlong into a torrent of self-sabotage. Thoughts about my inability, lack of experience, and lack of talent, among others, flooded my mind. “What makes you think you can do this?” reverberated. Yup, I met the enemy, and he is me.

Have you experienced anything similar?

Do you stop yourself from starting something because you lack confidence?

Do you hit a resistance point in a project where you stop your forward progress?
