I think it’s fair to say that one of the struggles many men experience is connecting with others and making new acquaintances and friends. As a dedicated introvert, it can be a painful and anxiety-filled experience.
With that in mind, it pushes me to think on other levels. For example:
- Purposely pushing myself into uncomfortable situations is “good” for me and my development.
- Knowing that it’s difficult for many people, making the effort is a kindness to the other person.
- Expanding my social network is beneficial because new people potentially bring new perspectives, experiences, and knowledge.
- There is no downside. Even if extending myself to start a conversation and build a potential relationship with someone fails miserably, I’ve actually lost nothing.
I stop short of saying it is our “responsibility” to help others on their journey. But one could make the argument that it is. After all, unless our goal is to sit atop a mountain somewhere on a solo retreat, we need each other. We need community.
Any thoughts?
